    Sea bass reports from party boats have been very good since the season opened last Friday. At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. Ron Santee reported the Wednesday evebing sailing of the Fishermen produced up to five keeper-size fluke, and Thursday's morning trip was decent as Capt. Ron Sr. hooked six legal fluke, and fares had up to five that size.

    Joe Melillo reported a big breakthrough on the surf this morning as Mark Malfa of Brick weighed a 27-pound striper at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant after catching it in the dark on an SP Minnow. John Bushell, at Betty Nick's, heard from a regular who had been catching blues in the inlet on bucktails since 2 a. m. Allen Riley of South Plainfield put up with a steady drizzle at Sandy Hook as he saw Dan Brodzinsky, The Tin Man, catch two small bass on a new Tin Man Tackle jig with a white tail Riley did nothing on either lures or fresh bunker until getting ready to leave when a 30-inch bluefish crashed a bunker chunk and was released.

    After bringing in the first mako shark and school bluefin tuna from the canyons earlier in the week, the Canyon Runner from Point Pleasant ran a Saturday to Sunday overnighter that produced the first yellowfin tuna (about 35 pounds) and two dolphin from canyons in over 1000 fathoms off Delaware for David Stratoff and his son. Honors for the first N. J. bigeye tuna fell to a boat in the Canyon Runner reporting team as the Flying Fish landed one in Cape May on the way back from North Carolina.

    Capt. Ryan Bogan of Jamaica II from Brielle reports Excellent sea bass fishing this Memorial Day Weekend. Full boat limit on opening day and very good fishing Saturday with many limits of sea bass up to 5 pounds.

    At Belmar, the Big Mohawk will be making a Monday fluke trip from 6 a. m. to 2 p. m. Capt. John Kolias took the Roy Runyak party down the beach to Shrewsbury Rocks on Saturday aboard his Reel Fun from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands, but the reports of stripers there that he had heard about didn't pan out.

    The Golden Eagle from Belmar had a few drifts with blues on Run-Off Hammer jigs, but not enough. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, weighed an 11-pound striper caught in Point Pleasant Canal by Bob Matthews of Belmar, plus two surf bass - a 13 3 8-pounder by Bob Longo of Brick on a plug, and a 12 1 8-pounder on metal for Jeff Garnett from Howell.

    Most of his regulars had been scared off by the northeast wind and rain on opening bay, but Zagleski e-mailed Opened our fluke season today with some regulars and had decent fishing for the guys. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands finished up daily striper fishing with just a few big fish.

    The Canyon Runner from Pint Pleasant brought in the first mako shark of the season Tuesday after their initial canyon overnighter. Six blue sharks were released at night before the 82-inch  (about 175 to 200 pound) mako was boated after a 25-minute fight.     Despite a motion by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Summer Flounder Management Board on Monday to not accept New Jersey's new rules, the state's summer flounder season will remain as scheduled. Summer flounder, also known as fluke, is one of the state's most popular sport fish, attracting many thousands of anglers each summer season because of the abundance of these delicately flavored fish close to beaches and in bays and creeks.

    Mate Steve Tosti didn't have any trouble loading a cooler with bunker after a few throws of a castnet even though we didn't leave until 9 a. m. Bluefish have been a big problem for those seeking stripers in Rartan Bay, so Contello ran to the Hudson River and waited out the bite on chunked bunker. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant also jigged 1-to-4-pound blues, but were fortunate enough to add a couple of stripers up to 30 pounds.
